NGO gives QECH patients, guardians Christmas treat
Convoy of Hope Foundation Malawi, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Tuesday surprised patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre with an early Christmas treat.
The NGO gifted the patients in wards 2A and 4B with items such as soap, sugar, sobo squash and bread, among others.
In an interview, the NGO’s director Gloria Makunje said they noted challenges patients face at the country’s largest referral hospital; hence, the help.
She said: “For us to come to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, it was because of the need we saw here.
“We know that as a referral hospital, some patients and guardians travel from as far as Nsanje, but do not have relatives in Blantyre.”
Makunje said the NGO has also implemented various projects at cancer wards such as building a waiting shelter, washing bay, painting toilets and bathrooms and the exterior, including the fence.
On her part, QECH principal nursing officer in the Oncology Department Wezie Mgungwe thanked the organisation for the gift.
She said despite QECH being a public health facility where patients get free food, cancer patients sometimes need some basics which the hospital does not provide.
Said Mgungwe: “The donation means a lot to the patients and the whole ward, including us the staff. We know the challenges patients in this ward face.”
One of the guardians, Kondwani James from Chikwawa, thanked the NGO for the timely help.
